brought on paul ryan as his running mate. do you think retrospectively that could actually cost him? >> i think this is more about mitt romney than it is about paul ryan. it's always more about the principal than it is about the vice presidential candidate. that being said, when you talk to trks over the last few years, ever since paul ryan unveiled his medicare plan several years ago, what they've said is we hope we can play even on medicare and this is in congressional races and senate races. the idea is they want to be able to play even on it. no one saying on the republican side we think we can win 70% or 75% based on this. that's usually where politicians want to be. they want to have issues that resonate with 75% of the people, not half the people. so if they're even at that 50% mark which i don't think they are right now, that would be considered a level of victory. it's hard to go into areas with lots of seniors and say i want to change the way medicare is structured. these people have been paying into the system for their entire lives. even if it doesn't affect them. even if it d

state of new hampshire. >> hey, fred. as running mate paul ryan makes the rounds on the campaign trail both here in new hampshire and ohio, his boss mitt romney is hunkering down, getting ready for the debate on wednesday, the first presidential showdown between him and president barack obama. romney spending a lot of this weekend in debate preparation. the same thing for the president. he's off the campaign trail today, tomorrow he does go out to nevada, but he's spending a lot of this weekend, we believe, behind closed doors getting ready. meanwhile, both campaigns are playing the expectations game, trying to lower the bar for their candidates. even the candidates themselves are doing it. take a listen to mitt romney recently on the campaign trail. >> he's president of the united states, he's a very effective speaker. >> he's a very eloquent speaker, and so i'm sure in the debates, as last time in his debates with senator mccain, he'll be very eloquent. >> it's not only mitt romney and his campaign playing the game. so is the obama campaign. >> what history tells us, that chall

out to the nfl playing fields. that was after his running mate, paul ryan, also of wisconsin, used the monday night football debacle as a convenient political metaphor. >> did you watch that packer game last night? i mean, give me a break. it is time to get the real refs. you know what? it reminds me of president obama and the economy. if you can't get it right, it is time to get out. >>> all of the pressure and not necessarily from politicians helped bring about a deal between the nfl and the referee's union late wednesday night. the real refs got a standing ovation before thursday night's browns/ravens game in baltimore. here is what makes that scene hilarious. ask any sports fan, player or coach, the least popular man or woman on the field is the one holding the wlislhistle. people hate referees. that is partly as a function. despite the striped uniforms, they are meant to be invisible. we only notice them when they mess up or as it seems when they are gone and not there doing their jobs as professionals. allow me a metaphor of my own. to me, this is part of the labor image we a

in trouble in ohio he's really in trouble in florida. he cannot lose both those states. and paul ryan brought nothing to the ticket except fear. we have a situation where white seniors are afraid of medicare, their message that we're going to protect it did not get through, seniors saw through that. and so i don't -- we can obsess about the smaller states and it's really tight in nevada but in the end ohio and florida if he can't win those he can't win. >> let's talk about fear for a second because -- i'll bring you back in, jeff. there was a great screen shot still from the newest romney ad that says literally emblazoned across a person's face your job is in danger. but the question jeff, does that message compute to people that things are bad and thus you're going to vote for the other guy at this point? >> it's really a question of which message is really resonating and in ohio and a lot of these states. in ohio particularly the obama team has pushed the auto rescue, there are a lot of jobs in ohio that were saved by that, and they see that as one of the reasons he's doing so well. the rom

's challenging. one thing to watch also is in the interview show with paul ryan, paul ryan was asked how does your budget plan add up? he says i'm not really sure i have time to explain that right now. you better believe they will press romney about it on wednesday. that's the kind of thing they have to avoid. >> karen, as alice brought up, foreign policy. that being a hot topic issue in the headlines and also for very good reason. americans want to know what president obama's foreign policy is going for. because of situations that seem to be forever in the lexicon of our conversation. certainly in afghanistan with what we've seen happening there. so karen, with that being said, can the president sharpen what he wants to say knowing that's going to be a vulnerable spot for him. mitt romney wants to prove that americans go through strength. and president obama may not have that philosophy. >> peace through strength is a nice slogan, but the president has unfortunately the burden of knowing the facts on the ground and knowing what is possible and what is not possible. foreign policy is complica

't like paul ryan. so you look at all the recent polls, you have four of them. you have reuters, gallup, bloomberg and fox show the president leading. which doesn't mitt romney embrace these polls and acknowledge them? say, this is how it is right now. we're going to change them? >> i think internally they probably are doing a lot of that and trying to figure out how they can shift the narrative, but i think that article is exactly right. yes, mitt romney has been a poor candidate. yes, his comments about the 47% have been truly devastating to this race. i think his problems go way back. they do go to a self-delusion the gop has about the president. that he's awful and a toaster oven could beat him in an election. it's not true. the american people like the president. mitt romney was forced to move so far to the right in the gop primary it's hard to come back to a sensible, mainstream view and his embrace of paul ryan on the ticket just made that that much harder. >> if you're in the wilderness for years and you're not winning and we have 8% unemployment and we should win this thing and

, but they don't seem to be taking-- seniors don't seem to be taking very well what mitt romney and paul ryan want to do about it. >> well, the first-- the first bit of good news is that mitt romney and paul ryan are not going to change medicare for those seniors. they're going to change medicare for folks like me, who just turned 50, and younger, who are going to need to know that if you want to have any semblance of medicare, you're going to have to make some changes to it. here's the dirty little secret, bob-- the president of the united states knows that, too, but he's not talkin talking abo. he's not being honest with the american people about it. in the end, i think the american people, if we lay out our vision well, will reward us for tell truth. and the president right now is avoiding the truth the way he's avoided so many hard truths over the last four years. >> schieffer: governor, if mitt romney does not win, are you going to run for president in 2016? >> mitt romney's gonna win, so it's a question that-- know, i don't need to address. i hope in 2016 to be work hard for mitt romney

state of paul ryan, who is also on the republican ticket. the gamble that the republicans made was that he would give them a bump here in the upper midwest, and that has not happened. it's not because paul ryan fails to connect with people or people don't know who mitt romney is. i think we are witnessing a full-scale swing in the pendulum. here in wisconsin scott walker survived the recall effort, but you have tammy baldwin pulling ahead of tommy thompson, a double-digit swing from where he was. she used to be trailing after the democratic convention. president obama is pulling ahead in the upper midwest. i think this may be less about -- this is only mitt romney, and mitt has to be mitt and it's all about mitt. this runs deeper than that. this is a sort of recentering of the american electorate we're witnessing. >> let's go back to the political article. it isn't the chair or the ho-hum convention or the looked video or stewart stevens or the improving economy or media bias or the message or mormonism. it's mitt. is it that simple? is the problem at the end of the day that it

of corrupting paul ryan and then embracing the ayn rand approach to economics which is just really far away from the political center, the whole percent thing that cannot romney which should be read this to some extent of being delightfully honest for today's gop is coming from in terms of their attitude towards economic and feel policy. it shouldn't have been an election that is a need for them either they haven't maximized that opportunity that is my take on what's going on and i hope you're going to check out the report and look typical maps and charts. there will be a short quiz later we want to bring up this great panel to discuss all these issues in a much more excruciating details. why don't you all come up here and get started. you want to be here -- that's fine. and i will be here. >> let me introduce the panel. senior vice president of greenburg research, one of my favorite favorite pollsters not only does she go out there and take the pulse of the nation but she also has an interest to say about it and digs beneath the surface of the data. to my right is my very favorite right-wing wh

a barn burner now for the next 33 days." >> reporter: today on fox news, his running mate paul ryan admitted the campaign has had some challenges. >> first of all, 47%, mitt acknowledges himself that was an inarticulate way of describing how we are worried in a stagnate obama economy more people are dependent on government. >> despite being down in most polls ryan said the gop ticket will eventually win over voters who are frustrated by a stagnant economy. >> given that we are going to win this. >> reporter: and romney has a lot to gain from a debate says cathleen hall jameison. >> the challenger has the opportunity to establish he is competent to stand up and hold his own against the president of the united states. a challenger who accomplishes that, in effect, wins the first debate. >> reporter: romney has been studying for the debates since june, the last month he has even been traveling with his obama stand-in, ohio senator rob portman who has joined him on his plane and campaign bus. the obama campaign contends romney has prepared more than any candidate in recent history. >> h

thursday morning. >> reporter: contrast that with romney's running mate paul ryan who was on another show at all the same time giving the president the edge. >> he is an experienced debater and has done these kinds of debates before. this is mitt's first time on this kind of a stage. >> reporter: a new "washington post" abc poll finds most vote expect the president to win the first face-off. meanwhile, there's already spin on how the media will cover the results. top obama strategist david plouffe said it will be pro-romney. ryan told fox news bias is already baked in. >> i think it goes without saying that there's definitely a media bias. i'm used to media bias. we expect media bias going into this. >> wow. >> reporter: some in the romney campaign are even questioning a slew of recent polls that show the president leading in crucial swing states like ohio. romney's ohio state director issued a memo saying that it is amazing what happens when you stop over-sampling democrats and fine a race in ohio that's as tight as a tick. rhode island an told one interview he prefers interviews with lo
